Bought because a) it’s by the people who wrote the Gruffalo and b) because it involves a boat, I had high expectations of this book. I do wish I would have read the story a little bit better, returned it to the shelf and slowly backed away.
Don’t get me wrong – the illustrations are great, the rhymes work well and the under-lying plot is engaging. The problem is that this is 2 stories meshed into one that make it difficult for the parent reader to follow let alone your toddler. It may work in adult fiction to have every other chapter be narrated by a new character or jump to a different time, but every other page just gets tiring. Weasel will sit through most books and follow along shouting and pointing; his one just dazes her and she ends up walking away to get another book of the shelf.
Verdict: A shame given its heritage and illustrations, but I wouldn’t recommend this one at all.
